Audrina Patridge says she felt so controlled and overwhelmed after appearing on MTV’s The Hills that she took some time off from television to focus on her personal life.
Audrina says that aside from Dancing with the Stars and her self-titled reality show she’s mostly taken “a step back” from reality television so she can live her life and find herself again.
“I felt I had to take a year off for my soul, for myself,” she says of the aftermath of being on The Hills. “I was so used to waking up and being told what to do, who to hang out with, what to say, what I was doing that night, who I should date. I felt I was losing who I was. I was like, ‘What do I want? I don’t know who I am anymore.’ ”
She’s since changed her life and laid low, mostly spending her time at the beach. “I rode my bike everywhere,” she explained of her time off. “I lived a simple life, and I took that time to figure out what I wanted.”
And she mostly distanced herself from her former MTV co-stars.
“I talk to Kristin [Cavallari] every now and then, and Heidi [Pratt] and I talk every month. … I don’t really talk to Lauren [Conrad] or Lo [Bosworth],” she admits. Adding that entire friendships were faked for the show. “We went our own separate ways. We weren’t all friends before The Hills, and we were kind of friends for the show.” Although, she notes, “We’re cordial. There are no bad feelings.”
She also is no longer close to on-screen on-off love Justin Bobby. She’s currently in an 8-year on-off relationship with BMX racer Corey Bohan.
“We’re working on things, and we both love each other. But it’s been a struggle. It’s hard when you’re rarely together,” she says. “I’ve always been a relationship girl, a one guy kind of girl. I want to be with someone that I’m comfortable with and who knows me and I can talk about anything with and who knows my family.”
Now she’s had some downtime, Audrina is making a return to TV with NBC lifestyle show 1st Look.
