Benedict Cumberbatch was a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show after his Golden Globes appearance and immediately before the announcement of his Oscar nomination for Best Actor for The Imitation Game.
The actor spoke about expecting a baby with fiancee Sophie Hunter and his fandom, the Cumberb**ches.
His fans named themselves and Benedict has spoken before about finding the name anti-feminist. He told Ellen “It’s like trying to squeeze a confession out of me getting me to actually say that word because I squirm a little bit about it.”
He continued, “Then they were very sweet and they wrote back to me saying: ‘We didn’t mean any harm to feminism. We’re just having a bit of fun with your name.’”
He added, “They wrote back and said, ‘We didn’t mean any harm to feminism. We were just having a little bit of fun with your name.’” He has insisted in the past that they call themselves “Cumberladies” or “Cumberpeople.”
Previously, his former co-stars Keira Knightley and Joel Edgerton talked about the intensity of the fandom. Joel said “he’s got this crazy legion of fans out there.” Keira said “It’s terrifying. I mean, they’re lovely. I feel terrified saying they’re terrifying ’cause they might come after me.”
