Karrueche Tran is currently receiving backlash on social media for mocking two-year-old Blue Ivy Carter’s natural hair on 106 & Park in a scripted joke that backfired on the presenter and the network.
During the bit, “The top 6 things Blue Ivy thought about the VMAs,” Karrueche joked: “I really did wake up like this because my parents never comb my hair.”
The reactions to the line were many and overwhelmingly negative. Even inspiring an apt article on feminist website Jezebel.com called “Blue Ivy’s Hair Is Perfect and You Should Shut Up About It” that correctly noted a lot of the ongoing kneejerk reactions about Blue Ivy’s natural hair seemed to be rooted in colourism and self-hate.
The kind of self-hate that led producers at BET to mock a child for a cheap laugh, and previously led other adults to start a petition to get Beyonce to comb Blue’s hair.
Admitting his mistake, however, Stephen Hill, President of Music Programming and Specials for BET (via Gawker commenter Kara Brown) wrote on Twitter:
“Last night on 106 & Park there was a stupid, unthoughtful joke made about a young child.
We apologize publicly to the child’s parents (and have done so privately) and we have taken punitive actions with those responsible.
It was very bad judgment and we will serve you much better in the future.
Oh, and please don’t hate on Karrueche; it was NOT her fault. We also apologize to her for putting her in that position.” – [via Twitter]
As he noted, Karrueche read the line off a teleprompter and didn’t write the joke herself. It was scripted, moreover added at the last minute on live television and she had to read it.
She and her manager reportedly raged at producers right after, calling the joke cruel and mean-spirited. And she says she would never disrespect the toddler nor the girl’s parents.
UPDATE 8/27/14: The producer has reportedly been suspended. Karrueche also issued a statement on Twitter:
Past two days have been extremely draining.. As I geared up for a big day for myself – hosting a live show.. I never expected things to turn out this way.. I apologize to any and everyone who felt offended in any way by the comments made by BET executed through me.. I would never disrespect anyone’s child in any way and anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE Beyoncé. My comments have been in complete shambles.. yes I am human too and yes I do make mistakes.. But all this negativity and death wishes are quite a lot.. Definitely a lesson learned from here forth.. Again, on behalf of MYSELF, my sincerest apologies ❤️ #BeyHive [via Twitter]
