It has been claimed that the adoptive parents of Carly, Brandon and Teresa Davis, have threatened to cut off contact with her birth parents, Teen Mom OG reality stars Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra. Catelynn has denied the claims, insisting that the reports are untrue. Admitting, however, that all adoption is a work in progress.
Now, Catelynn and her fiance, Tyler, admit they’ve made mistakes and selfish decisions about Carly in the past.
“You have to really figure out where you stand as birth parents and where they stand as her parents,” explains Catelynn (via WetPaint).
Catelynn further explained why she has struggled so much on Teen Mom OG with the consequences of choosing open adoption and choosing Brandon and Teresa as Carly’s adoptive parents. “Because as birth parents, you feel like, ‘Well, I birthed her, we love her just like she’s our own, so we should be able to do anything we want.’” she says.
Tyler added, “in reality, that’s not true… you can’t do everything you want.” On the show, Tyler argued that he and Catelynn should have as much say in Carly’s upbringing as her adoptive parents. He even seemed to threaten to share personal video of Carly anytime Brandon and Teresa didn’t give in to his demands (on a preview for the next Teen Mom, in response to demands that Catelynn and Tyler stop posting images of Carly online).
However, he explains, he’s changed his perspective a little “because you sacrificed so they can be in control of all those parenting decisions, which we really respect.” It’s hardest for him “when you want more than they’re willing to give” because he and his fiancee “get a little selfish.”
