There is a scene in Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil that’s got fans talking: THAT one-shot fight scene that takes place with the hero, Daredevil, and multiple bad guys in a corridor.
Note: This post almost certainly contains mild spoilers for anyone who hasn’t watched Daredevil season 1.
Fans have noticed that several scenes in Daredevil appear to have been inspired by other shows/movies. For example, there is a scene where the main character, Matt Murdock, dangles a fire extinguisher and drops it from a great height down a stairwell onto someone’s head. Just like Patrick Bateman did with a chainsaw in a similar scene from American Psycho. Another scene that borrows from other sources is the single-take hallway fight scene. Which seems to take inspiration from Korean movie Oldboy (the original version) and from The Raid.
Although the scene was shot so that it COULD be spliced/ edited if needed, according to producers, one particular take worked so well that there was no need to edit it. So it has NOT been cut. The stunt co-ordinator reveals:
I was just about to ask you about that one-shot scene.
I think this was what started defining the show for me, and the weight that was being played into it. Phil Abraham was directing, and it was always scripted that this scene was going to be a one-shot. For me in my head, with the time, we had, I said let’s do wipes and we’ll be able save things. But Phil challenged us to do a pure one-shot, which really just brought a grounded real feeling to the whole thing. We were able to slow down the fight, and just have this raw, animalistic feeling happening.
So it was genuinely one shot? No cuts?
No cuts. We did do a few Texas Switches between our actor and our stunt double, but it was purely a one shot fight. There were no cuts in that fight. Every performer, the actors and the stunt doubles, were in there performing that fight full on. I’d say there was a minimum of 105 beats, and they killed it.
And how many takes did you have to shoot?
I feel like our magic number was take around 7 or 8. [via the Observer]
Here’s the scene from Daredevil and Old Boy for comparison. WARNING: These are violent and NSFW.
