Giuliana Rancic has tried to explain for a third time why she said a young actress with dreadlocks on the Oscars red carpet looked like her hair smelled.
Previously, former Fashion Police co-host Kathy Griffin pointed out that while she wrote her own jokes someone like Giuliana did not. Giuliana had to follow a script.
Sources changed their story about how many takes it took to get the joke right. Some say three times, other sources say the joke was told once. And now, rather than blaming it on a lack of awareness of racial stereotypes, Giuliana says Fashion Police producers edited her to look bad.
Asked to explain what she meant, Giuliana recalled, “I made a reference to the hippie culture.” However, she says, she was edited to look bad, “In the editing process, some of the gestures I made, some of the things I said were taken out for time.”
She explains, “So I made peace signs, I said bohemian twice. Those were taken out for time, so when the joke aired, some people were offended by it.”
Giuliana says, she’s no racist, “I find racism reprehensible. I don’t tolerate it at all. Nor have I ever. And I think that’s really important for me to get that out there, because that’s been the hardest part of this, that someone could believe that I actually would have racial undertones in the things I do.”
She says, “I thought the joke was not edited in the proper way. That’s just something I have to live with. It’s very important for me to get out there and tell the real story.”
Asked whether she would appear on Fashion Police when it debuts again in September, she said “We’ll see.”
Perhaps Giuliana keeps changing her story and blaming other people because her family have been threatened over the original comments.
