Kanye West is under fire again. This time for the mistreatment of disabled fans at his Yeezus show.
The rapper was on stage at the Qantas Credit Union Arena in Melbourne, Australia when he noticed a few fans were not dancing to his hits. He stopped the performance and yelled that they had to stand up and dance immediately “unless y’all sitting down because y’all handicapped.” However, at least one was in a wheelchair.
One attendee noted (via The Daily Mail), “He wanted the crowd to stand up and couldn’t see why they were seated. Once it clicked that they couldn’t [stand], he started the song.”
Another wrote on Twitter, “I can see Kanye tell someone in a wheelchair to ‘stand up and dance.'” Added another, “Kanye made everyone stand up…. Bereted a dude for not standing up… Stopped the whole show… Turns out the dude was in a wheelchair.”
An eyewitness notes that Kanye stopped the music and said “I can’t do this song, I can’t do this show until everybody stand up… Unless you got a handicap pass and you get special parking and s**t.” He added, “Imma see you if you ain’t standing up, believe me, I’m very good at that.”
One fan waved a prosthetic limb at the rapper and he said “Okay, you fine!” However, another person remained seated and so Kanye stopped performing The Good Life and said “This is the longest I’ve had to wait to do a song, it’s unbelievable.” He then sent security to verify that the person was in a wheelchair. Which they were.
The eyewitness recalls, “The crowd was also yelling that he was in a wheelchair but he waited for [security’s] confirmation… When he sent [security] up there he said, ‘He is in a wheelchair? It’s fine!'”
Here’s video taken from the crowd with the incident from 1:30.
