Kathy Griffin has opened up about the scandal that followed Giuliana Rancic’s comments about Zendaya’s hair at the Oscars.
Kathy explained that it would never have blown up like it did if she (Kathy) told the joke. However, Kathy tells Us Weekly Magazine: “I wouldn’t have said the joke in the first place.”
Kathy explained why she would not have made a joke about dreadlocks looking dirty and being smelly: “Always go for the laugh,” she says, “be as inappropriate as possible… but also change with the times.” Kathy is referring to the backlash where people called Giuliana a racist after which she offered TWO apologies for what she said.
Kathy adds of the mistake, “Some dude wrote [the dreadlock joke] for her.” She offers some advice to her co-host, “Don’t have anyone write you jokes or even suggest jokes for you on Fashion Police. She has enough great insider gossip from actually being on the red carpet. That’s what fans want to hear the next day. Just talk and be yourself.”
Kathy, for her part, will “make my Miley Cyrus jokes as long as people want to laugh at them. But there is a chasm of difference between making a joke about Miley Cyrus wearing duct tape over her nipples out in public — which I think is totally fair game — and simply looking at a photo of her on a red carpet and saying she is ugly or a bad singer or pathetic or something like that.”
The comedienne reveals of former Fashion Police co-host Kelly Osbourne’s dramatic exit from the show, “Sometimes [Kelly] seemed very upset at the merely seven tapings of Fashion Police we did together. I can tell you this: I adore that family…Kelly came to my house a couple of times when Joan was in the hospital and we were consoling each other. I can tell you there was genuine love there.”
Kelly recently appeared on The Talk with her mother, Sharon Osbourne, and spoke about suddenly quitting Fashion Police.
Kelly said: “You know what, it was the five best working years of my life. I am so grateful for the experience — working with Joan Rivers for five years was incredible. I learned so much and I’m excited for my future. I want to try new things.”
