After a week of racially-loaded controversy about Fashion Police hosts Giuliana Rancic and Kelly Osbourne, Kelly has left the show. Kelly says she quit. However, insiders say she was effectively fired.
The scandal started when Giuliana and an off-screen host said of Zendaya’s dreadlocks at the Oscars, “She has just such a tiny frame that this hair, to me, overwhelms her. I feel like she smells like patchouli oil. Or weed! Yeah, maybe weed?”
Kelly went on a Twitter rant, writing “I WILL NOT BE DRAGGED INTO THIS! The situation is being rectified like ADULTS by both parties. I hope you can leave it to them & do the same!” Adding “you guys do realize that @Zendaya is my friend right?”
Kelly was being dragged into the negativity and insisted that unless the situation were made right she would walk off the show. “Im giving everyone involved 24 hours to make it right or the world will hear how I really feel. contactually Im not allowed to speak!” she tweeted during a rant. “I DID NOT MAKE THE WEED COMMENT. I DO NOT CONDONE RACISM SO AS A RESULT OF THIS IM SERIOUSLY QUESTIONING STAYING ON THE SHOW!”
Giuliana apologised (twice) and Zendaya forgave. Kelly reacted “It takes a strong woman to apologize & makes a forgiving woman even stronger! #ThisTooShallPass”.
However, a few hours later, TMZ reported that Kelly was no longer part of the show. The network confirmed with a statement: “Kelly Osbourne is departing E!’s Fashion Police to pursue other opportunities, and we would like to thank her for her many contributions to the series over the past five years, during which time the show became a hit with viewers. Fashion Police will return, as scheduled, on Friday, March 30th at 9:00 p.m. and no decisions have been made on her replacement.”
However, hours later, insiders admitted that producers were furious at Kelly’s ultimatum and ranting and told her to “jump or be pushed”. “We are told she was given the option to quit or be fired,” revealed a source. “In reality, she was let go. Producers had had enough.”
