Kylie Jenner has explained the photos posted on social media that her own fans are calling “blackface.”
There was a mini-backlash when Kylie posted some photos, showing her with dark skin, saying she wished she looked like that all the time.
She was criticised by fans in the Instagram comments. She had one supporter though, Zendaya, who applauded the look.
Zendaya was attacked online for her poor judgement. She seemed to side with fans and eventually denounce the photos. Zendaya tweeted: “I didn’t see [Kylie’s photos] like [blackface] at first…that’s crazy”. Adding, “My baaaaadddd… At first, I saw more of an avatar look but thank y’all for keepin me on point….we all gotta stay aware of what image we project #lessons”.
Kylie reacted to the backlash too. Kylie tweeted “so just got the time to head on social media lol.. The photographer used a black light & neon lights for those photos.”
As the photos looked like blackface to some people, Kylie explained why she wrote the caption “I wish I looked like [this] all the time.” She joked, “Yes, In another world I wish I could have pink hair & blue eyes & covered in sparkles… But in this world I’m happy w the way God created me. Happy Easter everybody.”
The scandal seemed to have blown over. However, then Kylie posted yet ANOTHER photo (top of the page), with the caption “goodnight @marcelocantuphoto @joycebonelli @ChrisDylanHair”. Which just stirred everything up again.
Also, fans are noting that Kylie did appear to wish she were black. Moreover, her social media names include “Kylizze” and KylizzleMyNizzl” with the latter including slang for the N-word. As such, some fans are calling out Kylie’s lack of self-awareness and continued poor judgement.
