Maci Bookout talks about being mom-shamed for years on social media in her new book, I Wasn’t Born Bulletproof.
She talks about Teen Mom fans criticising her parenting ability, lifestyle choices, and how she copes with the scrutiny.
“The fact that I am on television means that everything I do is open to public scrutiny,” she writes. “I have learned not to let it get me down, but it never ceases to amaze me how quick people are to pass judgement.”
Fans have accused Maci of drinking too much. Criticising her and husband Taylor McKinney for sharing photos of themselves drinking/holding alcohol on social media.
Maci writes that she intended to work through their issues, for the sake of their son, Bentley, because she had “so much invested”. However, she realised it wasn’t healthy to stay in a bad relationship for the sake of their child.
“I convinced myself that I needed to make it work and ignored a lot of red flags,” Maci writes.
“It was my second love, and my most toxic relationship. When it finally ended it was painful, but I also felt a sense of relief that the relationship was over.”
Maci recalls that she and Ryan were estranged for a year before they ended it for good.
“We tried for a little while because we thought staying together was the right thing for Bentley (after all my parents have stayed together through all kinds of ups and downs since they were teenagers),” she writes. “But ultimately we realized that being happy and apart was far healthier for our son than being miserable and together.”
Earlier today, Maci shared the book cover on Instagram:
