Mindy Kaling says people keep giving her the backhanded compliment that it’s positive to see non-skinny or non-conventionally attractive people “like her” on television.
Imitating one of these conversations, she is often told “You’re ugly and fat, and that is so refreshing to us…'”
She continues, “I’m like, ‘What are you saying to me, sir?’ ‘Well, we’re used to skinny people, and you’re so ugly and refreshing.’ ‘That’s not a question, sir.'”
Previously, The Mindy Project actress responded to the ELLE cover controversy.
The magazine had a series of covers the same month, although Mindy was the only headshot and the only one in black and white.
She said that she loved her cover, however, writing on Twitter, “I love my @Ellemagazine cover. It made me feel glamorous & cool. And if anyone wants to see more of my body, go on thirteen dates with me.”
ELLE Magazine denied any racism or body shaming, claiming “Mindy looks sexy, beautiful and chic. We think it is a striking and sophisticated cover and are thrilled to celebrate her in our Women in TV Issue.”
