The Miss Universe 2015 pageant went very wrong. Host Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner. The wrong winner got a crown and sash. They had to remove the crown and give it to the correct winner as the crowd booed.
In a series of mix-ups Steve announced the wrong winner of the Miss Universe 2015 pageant.
Steve accidentally announced Ariadna Gutierrez, Miss Colombia as the winner. She got a crown, flowers, sash and waved at the crowd in celebration for a few minutes before Steve realised the mistake.
Steve blamed a card with the names on. He got confused and missed some vital info (on SnapChat he reportedly blamed a bad teleprompter). Here is the card. It says “2ND RUNNER UP: MISS USA; 1ST RUNNER UP MISS COLOMBIA; MISS USA IS MISS PHILIPPINES.”
Steve didn’t notice the name bottom right and confused 1st runner up with 1st overall. He held up the card in the live show to avoid calls of foul play (presumably).
“I have to apologize,” Steve said. “The first runner-up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines!”
“Listen folks, let me take control of this,” he added. “This is exactly what’s on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. The first runner-up is Colombia. Still a great night. Please don’t hold it against the ladies.”
VIDEOS MISS UNIVERSE: STEVE SAYS WRONG WINNER
2014 Miss Universe winner Paulina Vega (also Colombian) broke the bad news to this year’s Miss Colombia.
Steve took the crown and sash from 1st runner up Miss Colombia (Ariadna). People booed.
The real winner Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, Miss Philippines stepped forward. The women looked confused and distressed. Steve asked the crowd to blame him not the women as the crowd continued to boo.
Steve issued an apology on Twitter.
The apology spelled the names of Colombia (Columbia) and Philippines (Philippians, seemingly a reference to the bible he got mixed up with the country) wrong. The tweet has since been deleted.
