MTV has distanced itself from the season finale of Teen Mom where one of its cast, Ryan Edwards, drove while high on drugs.
In the scene, Ryan is dressed in his wedding outfit and driving Mackenzie Standifer in her wedding dress (they agree the wedding is “just a formality” to leverage in any forthcoming custody battle).
Ryan is filmed driving, slurring his words and falling asleep at the wheel, with Mackenzie occasionally looking over and elbowing Ryan. Mackenzie eventually reaches over and grabs the wheel. Then she turns off the cameras, forgetting about the mics, and asks whether Ryan took Xanax. Which he denies.
Since the episode, Ryan has admitted having a problem and sought treatment.
MTV has distanced itself from the incident and released a statement.
“MTV does not condone driving under the influence,” said an MTV spokesperson. “Ryan’s erratic behavior was due to actions that he took without anyone’s prior knowledge.”
Previously, Teen Mom co-star Simon Saran, on-off boyfriend of Farrah Abraham, made serious allegations against MTV. Simon alleged that an MTV producer may have provided Ryan with narcotics.
Simon claims that MTV producer Kiki Malone (above, centre) caused the incident by allegedly giving Ryan pills.
“Someone needs to open up an investigation on Kiki giving Ryan pills. It’s really f**ked up!” Simon tweeted. “They could have died or [been] killed!”
Earlier this month, Simon wrote more shocking claims: “I wonder if I should talk about Kiki giving Ryan pills during shoots or save that for another day?”
