Her latest show, HTGAWM, starring Viola Davis (pictured), features characters of all backgrounds. There is also at least one openly gay character. However, it would appear that not everyone watching is so open-minded and in their opinion it’s distasteful to have gay characters at all or being sexual.
One fan expressed as much on Twitter and Shonda was quick to reply that she doesn’t need to cater to their bigotry. They’re entitled to their feelings/ beliefs and she’s entitled to call them out for it. A viewer wrote, “@shondarhimes the gay scenes in scandal and how to get away with murder are too much. There is no point and they add nothing to the plot.”
Shonda replied, “There are no GAY scenes. There are scenes with people in them.” She added, “If you are suddenly discovering that Shondaland shows have scenes involving people who are gay, you are LATE TO THE PARTY.” Moreover, she quipped, “If u use the phrase “gay scenes”, u are not only LATE to the party but also NOT INVITED to the party. Bye Felicia. #oneLOVE”. (With “Bye, Felicia” being a joking reference to the movie Friday).
She continued, “Ok, tweeps. Someone got me all riled up and fighting 4 my friends and their love and the equality of all — I am supposed to be WRITING.” Adding, “So, I know you lovelies are asking me questions but I have to go. And finish making script notes. So you have more #GreysAnatomy to watch.” And, “I love all you Tweeples. Even the ones who still need to grow. And remember that at some point, someone discriminated against you too.”
