Singer-songwriter Sia performed on Saturday Night Live this weekend with her face covered.
In one performance, Sia covers her face and sings Chandelier live with a mime taking center stage. In the Elastic Heart performance, she is singing with her face covered with a black piece of lace and Dance Moms’ Maddie Ziegler is dancing along with another female dancer (the music video co-stars Shia LaBeouf). Here are the videos…
Pretty close to the parody with Jim Carrey from an earlier episode of SNL?
On a performance for The Ellen Show, Sia sang in a corner facing away from the audience. Sia gives interviews with the camera pointing at the back of her head. She even takes photos at fan meet-and-greets facing the wall.
For fans wondering why the 38-year-old covers her face, Sia has admitted to issues with her appearance.
Chandelier is a song about her alcoholism and although she has been sober for three years she still is anxious, self-conscious and doesn’t want people judging her appearance, just her music. She has admitted anxiety about her looks led to drug and alcohol addiction, depression and thoughts of suicide. She is also bipolar.
The famed songwriter explained to NPR her attitude to fame, “I don’t need to promote this album at all,” she says, “because I make enough money to live nicely from all my pop songwriting.”
“I’m trying to have a good life,” she added. “Basically, my plan is to enjoy what I have.”
She told ABC News: “I don’t want to be famous or recognisable. I don’t want to be critiqued about the way that I look on the Internet. I was at Target the other day buying a hose and nobody recognised me and my song was on the radio and I thought, okay, this experiment is working!”
She told the New York Times: “I just wanted to have a private life. Once, as my friend was telling me they had cancer, someone came up and asked, in the middle of the conversation, if they could take a photograph with me.”
She added, “I don’t want to be famous, or recognizable. I don’t want to be critiqued about the way that I look on the Internet…. I’ve been writing pop songs for pop stars for a couple years and see what their lives are like and that’s just not something I want.”
For the record, she has been showing her face for years and even mentored on The Voice as part of Christina Aguilera’s team. She also did this ad for PETA.
