The wedding will reportedly take place at a register office in Dereham, Norfolk (near to where Stephen grew up). No date has been set yet.
The QI host and former Blackadder star (admittedly suffering with depression and being bipolar) spoke of his loneliness in 2013, calling it profound and sad. Saying that he hated being alone.
A friend of Stephen’s told UK newspaper The Mirror of Stephen planning to wed someone 30 years his junior “Since Stephen met Elliott it is like he has a new lust for life.”
The source continued, “Stephen and Elliot get on brilliantly together. It’s fantastic to see Stephen with a smile on his face again. He has been very, very open about his battles with drugs and depression. Elliot seems to have given him the confidence to live his life again. It’s great to have the old Stephen back.”
Another insider told The Sun newspaper, “We’ve got the old Stephen back.”
Stephen confirmed the news on Twitter soon after it leaked to the British tabloids. He wrote “Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag. I’m very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!” Adding, “Thank you all SO much for your kind congratulations. Deeply touched xxx… Your adorable tweets are bringing me close to sobbing.”
Hours later, he added “Couple of journos parked outside my place. Wonder what I should do? Have said ‘nothing to say thanks’ but they’re still there. Hmmm.”
Seeming to regret confirming the news at all, he tweeted “Grrr. Number of journos outside has now doubled. They obviously heard about the free coffee. Perhaps that was a mistake!”
In July last year, Elliot tweeted “I had the confidence of a gnat when I met Mr @stephenfry Show him some respect – he’s the man.”
