Zendaya has explained in more detail why she dropped out of the movie. The Disney singer and actress confirmed her exit on Twitter this week, thanking fans for their support. She tweeted, “my Zswaggers are the BEST! Thank you for your undying support thru everything!”
Now she’s explained again on the BET awards red carpet.
“I feel it was being rushed and I feel like production just wasn’t there,” of the Lifetime movie set to film in the summer and air the same fall.
She continues, “I have too much respect and love for Aaliyah as a person to do anything less than for her.” The Disney star adds, “If I’m going to do something, it has to be done 120 percent right. I love her and can’t wait to portray her another time when the time is right…”
On Lifetime star of the TLC biopic, KeKe Palmer, defending the original casting, she adds “We were friends but after this she’s definitely like a big sister, for sure.”
Aaliyah’s family were not supportive of the movie and restricted access to the late star’s likeness and back catalog.
Lifetime confirmed they’re postponing the shoot, writing on Twitter “We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold.”
